Starting with the classic cuvée, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre. This sexy, medium to full-bodied effort has a great nose of black raspberries, mulled strawberries, lavender, and Provençal garrigue. With no hard edges, a pure, layered, balanced mouthfeel, and ripe, silky tannins, it's well worth a case purchase.
Shows succulent raspberry pâte de fruit and plum puree notes that glide through, with lively anise and black tea hints. Reveals a subtle apple wood accent on the finish, along with a sanguine thread. Silky and persistent. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Drink now through 2035. 1,800 cases made, 100 cases imported.
Tasted as a representative blend (the wine was still in wood when I visited), the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape looks a step off the pace of the fine 2019. Cedar notes accent blackberry fruit in this medium to full-bodied blend of 77.5% Grenache, 14% Syrah and 8.5% Mourvèdre, but note that it's likely to vary a bit once the final blend is made.
