Filled with floral, candied fruit, baking spices, Morello cherry, leather, and smoked meats, the 2017 SMD brings many unfolding layers to the table. Bright and juicy on the front of the palate, the wine’s dense, bold body with structured tannins reveal complex notes of cedar, black cherry, tobacco leaf, and cassis leading to a vivacious finish.

All of the wines spent 21 months in French oak barrels and were bottled unfiltered. The wines show the best of their vibrancy in the first decade, while being able to age longer, and in the short-term benefit from being decanted to allow them to open up fully. 

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 SMD Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain is redolent of crème de cassis, dried mulberries, fruitcake and fragrant earth, with hints of fallen leaves, tobacco leaf, earth, spice box and chocolate box. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of spicy black fruit preserves with a firm, grainy texture and plenty of freshness, finishing long and layered. 547 cases were made.

Coming all from Spring Mountain and 100% Cabernet aged 21 months in barrel, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon SMD has a more medium-bodied, pretty, balanced style as well as a classic mountain style in its blue fruits, pine, floral, and spicy aromas and flavors. It’s an outstanding, balanced, high-quality Cabernet that will evolve for 15 years.
