Fresh lemon, mirabelle and quince preserves, along with sweat and sea breeze, make for a haunting aromatic impression. Pungently smoky, spicy inflections on a palpably dense palate owe as much or more to botrytis as they do to Nackenheim’s classic red Permian soil. The lingering finish is honeyed in its combination of glycerol-richness and quince jelly flavor. There is a welcome hint of saliva-inducing salinity, but nothing approaching the bright juiciness, clarity, site-typicity or vibrancy of the corresponding Spätlese. Perhaps some of those deficiencies will be rectified with time, but color me skeptical.
