The 2017 Pommard Les Arvelets 1er Cru, matured in 50% new oak, is showing just a little more wood than the Les Pezerolles at the moment. It feels more opaque, holding its cards close to its chest. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite dense in the mouth, and lightly spiced with touches of white pepper and clove toward the poised finish, which, despite the backward nose, bodes well for the future.

This too is admirably cool and pure with its high-toned if somewhat less elegant mélange of red and dark currant, pungent earth, humus and pretty floral wisps. The racy and minerally middle weight flavors possess a lilting mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the slightly drying and short finish. This may well recover as the tannins seem ripe but that is not a certainty.
