Antiquity and youthfulness dance together in every bottle of Bernard Baudry’s Les Granges from Chinon. The wine is produced in the highly esteemed and historically rich area surrounding the town of Chinon which has been producing wines since the 11th Century from Cabernet Franc. The wines from Chinon were a favorite of the English for centuries, making it an international star very early on. Bernard Baudry has continued lifting Chinon’s star since 1975 when he planted his first vineyard, and that star has been pushed to even further heights since his son Matthieu joined him in 2000.

The youthfulness comes from the more supple style of wine produced in the Les Granges vineyard, which is on soil of gravel and sand along the bank of the River Vienne. This well-draining soil allows the grapes to ripen more giving us a wine with a rich bouquet of wildflowers and the taste of fresh, ripe berries. It is easy drinking and more delicate than many of the austere and vegetal wines found in Chinon, making it the perfect summer red wine.

The quality of Les Granges (and all of Bernard Baudry’s wines) is unmistakable due in part to the care that Matthieu takes while cultivating the vines. He has been utilizing organic practices since 2006 and he constrains growth through partial disbudding in order to balance with the climate and richness of the soil, bringing the grapes to their optimal ripeness. They are then hand harvested and sorted before the wine is then fermented in cement vats and aged in cement vats for up to 10 months to maintain its youthful characteristic. Drink this wine young and slightly chilled and pair it with a Skirt Steak with Warm Chickpea, Farro, and Kale Salad while listening the French jazz artist, Stacey Kent.
