The 2018 Bibbiano 'Vigna del Capannino' Chianti Classico Gran Selezione comes from the warm dry 2018 season and it has an immediate sex appeal and drinkability that is hard to keep your hands off. They make this sultry single vineyard stunner with 100% Sangiovese Grosso clone, also known as Brunello clone, which make richer, darker, more opulent versions of Sangiovese. The Gran Selezione is the highest expression of this pristine vineyard that ages 24 months in oak and it has an intensity and mouthcoating quality that will make you forget the rustic side of Chianti. This beautiful wine also won a three cup award from Gambero Rosso. That's the highest level from Italy's version of Robert Parker. (Ryan Tedder, May 2023)
This is really succulent with sliced plums, blackberries and some dark chocolate. It’s full-bodied and beautifully crafted. Long and flavorful with gorgeous polish. From organically grown grapes.
Bibbiano’s seven-hectare Capannino vineyard is planted with Sangiovese Grosso clones from Montalcino. It enjoys a warm southwest exposure on blue clay with Alberese schist. Dusty, dark and brooding on the nose, the 2018 hints at liquorice, leather and black cherry. The palate is sweeter and friendlier, with macerated berries and cinnamon enveloped in plush, layered tannins. Easygoing yet lively acidity gives a boost. Ageing is in a combination of concrete vats, French oak barrels, and Slavonian oak casks.
Harmony and grace are the hallmarks of this red, whose cherry, currant, tobacco, iron, sanguine and underbrush flavors are nicely integrated with the firm structure. Ends on a savory note, with an undercurrent of ripe fruit.
The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Capannino is bright and expressive, with plenty of energy, and fine overall balance. Ripe red cherry, leather, spice, tobacco, incense and dried flowers all meld together effortlessly. The 2018 has quite a bit to offer.
