The 2017 Gattinara Riserva is a powerful, incisive wine. Dried cherry fruit, leather, spice, menthol, tobacco and licorice open with a bit of coaxing, but the 2017 remains quite stern. It is the sort of wine that needs years in the cellar to shed tannin and hopefully develop the inner sweetness that can make Gattinara so compelling. Whether that happens here is somewhat of a question mark today.
