The 2018 Alomado was produced with a field blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% white grapes—10% Viura, 6% Malvasía Riojana and 4% Calagraño—from a plot planted in 1960 on limestone-rich soils in Ábalos. Once destemmed, all the grapes fermented together in small oak vats, followed by malolactic in used 500-liter oak barrels and an élevage of 18 month in those same barrels. It was my least favorite of the three reds he currently produces, as the wine came through as quite ripe, despite the 13.5% alcohol, and was somewhat marked by the toast of the barrels compared with the other two wines. The palate reveals some oak tannins and flavors and some chalky sensations that call for a little more time in bottle. 2,000 bottles and 50 magnums were filled June 2020.
Focused and fresh, this red shows good purity, with boysenberry and cherry notes flanked by floral, anise and orange peel details. Savory touches of white pepper and mineral give complexity to the moderately tannic finish. Drink now through 2028. 166 cases made, 35 cases imported. — GS
