This famous Bajan “Gold Medal” beverage and mixer was developed by John D. Taylor of Bridgetown, Barbados, in 1890. This sugar cane based liqueur is a staple of every Bajan’s bar. The uniquely refreshing flavour comes from a refined infusion of lime laced with fine cane syrup and botanicals including almonds and cloves.
According to a 1982 New York Times article, the name Falernum is derived from a story which includes a housewife’s recipe for the mixture and describes a moment of misunderstanding that resulted in the syrup’s namesake:
Once, when a woman was asked for the ingredients, she answered in the dialect, ‘Haf a learn um’ – ‘Have to learn how it’s done.’ Hence the name.
