April 13th Picks: Two Cru Beaujolais Wines We Love
Brouilly & Fleurie—organically farmed reds that bring freshness, structure, and versatility to the table. These aren't your average Beaujolais wines.
Brian Newman’s Pick
Yann Bertrand Fleurie Vielles Vignes 2023, Beaujolais, France
Growing up in Fleurie, Yann Bertrand learned from mentors such as Jean Foillard what great viticulture and winemaking are all about. His wines show an incredible sense of place and a clear, thoughtful approach in the cellar. This bottling comes from 60-year-old vines, with the cuvée aged longer in used barrels and held an additional year in bottle before release. No additional SO₂ is added, and fermentation relies on native yeasts. The wine shows notes of raspberry and cherry, with a pronounced mineral streak on the finish. It should pair well with grilled salmon and corn with roasted red peppers.

Zack Whitaker’s Pick
Bonnet Cotton Brouilly Cru Beaujolais 2023
Husband and wife team, Pierre Cotton and Marine Bonnet, both grew up in the vineyards of Beaujolais and have now returned to Pierre's family cellar in the Cote de Brouilly to make their own wine. Drawing inspiration from their friends Yann Bertrand and Jules Metras, all of their wines are farmed organically and without any added sulpher. This wine has notes of black cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate with undertones of wet stone, licorice, and peppery spice. Pair with Roast Chicken, Smoked Duck, or a savory Mushroom Risotto.
