Producer's Notes

Distilled from wines made from the noble Armagnac grape varieties Ugni Blanc, Colombard and, particularly, Folle Blanche. Much of the oak at Boingnères actually comes from the Gascon forests. Martine contracts trees every year and air dries the staves next to one of the chai. The staves are then fabricated into 420-liter barrels. The barrels then go into one of the two Boingnères chai. Both are relatively dry. Consequently, the alcohol level descends very slowly, so that even after 20 years, some barrels have only lost 3 degrees of alcohol! As traditionally Armagnac is released without being reduced in alcohol—and Martine Lafitte is a strict traditionalist—the armagnacs at Boingnères are released at cask strength to ensure their absolute purity.

Domaine Boingnères Cépages Nobles 1985 Bas-Armagnac is a rare vintage Bas-Armagnac from Domaine Boingnères, one of the benchmark estates in Gascony. The domaine is known for traditional production methods, estate-grown fruit, and exceptionally long aging in oak, producing Armagnacs with remarkable depth and structure.

The “Cépages Nobles” bottlings are made from the region’s traditional noble grape varieties, typically including Folle Blanche and Baco, varieties prized for their aromatic intensity and aging potential. Distilled in 1985 and matured for decades in French oak, this vintage develops an intricate profile of dried apricot, prune, orange peel, walnut, vanilla, baking spice, tobacco, and polished wood.

On the palate, it is concentrated and deeply layered, balancing rich caramelized fruit and earthy rancio character with freshness and lift. The long aging brings tremendous complexity without overwhelming the spirit’s elegance, showcasing why mature Bas-Armagnac remains one of the great values in aged spirits.
