Producer's Notes

The Huard family have lived on the Le Pertyer property in the Suisse-Normand for 5 generations. Jean-Francois Guillouet, who fully took over in 2012 when his grandfather Michel died, is the seventh generation. If one were to consider the properties of Camut and Giard from the Domaine de Montreuil as the most stunning examples of hautes-tiges plantings in the Pays d'Auge, and Lemorton as the most revered property in the Domfrontais, the Huard property would have to be considered the most admired in AOC Calvados. Nearly 1,800 trees on standard rootstock grace the 15-hectare property, sitting on a loamy soil composed of an ideal combination of silt and clay. Around 20 varieties of apple, mostly the sweet and bittersweet types, are grown and tended to here (along with the family's 50 steer!). The cider is fermented and aged for about 8 months, then distilled in a traveling column still. The spirits then go into large, elongated barrels, stained black by time, or well-seasoned 400 liter barrels where there complex apple flavors develop.
Description

Michel Huard Calvados 2004 is a vintage Norman apple brandy that reflects the deeply traditional character of small-scale Calvados production in Normandy. Carefully distilled from fermented cider and aged slowly in oak casks, the spirit captures both the freshness of orchard fruit and the layered complexity that develops through extended maturation.

The 2004 vintage shows impressive balance between mature savory notes and vibrant fruit character. The nose opens with baked apple, dried pear, honeycomb, vanilla, toasted walnut, and baking spice layered over earthy orchard and cellar notes. On the palate, it is supple and quietly complex with flavors of caramelized apple, almond, orange peel, spice cake, tea leaf, and gentle oak tannin balanced by bright acidity and lingering orchard freshness.

Compared with younger Calvados, the additional aging here brings more texture, integration, and subtle oxidative depth while still preserving the spirit’s cider-driven core. The vintage bottling allows the personality of the growing season and long maturation to show through with added nuance and individuality.

This is an elegant after-dinner spirit for drinkers who appreciate mature fruit brandies, especially those drawn to the balance of richness and freshness found in traditional Calvados.
