Romano Levi Grappa Paglierina is one of the classic bottlings from the legendary Piedmont distillery founded by Romano Levi, a cult figure in the world of traditional grappa. Produced in Neive in the Langhe, the spirit is distilled from fresh grape pomace using small direct-fire alembic stills, a painstaking and increasingly rare method that gives Levi’s grappas their distinctive texture and aromatic complexity. The hand-drawn labels, originally illustrated by Romano himself, have become as iconic as the spirit inside the bottle.

“Paglierina” refers to the grappa’s pale straw hue, which comes from a brief period of resting in wood rather than extended barrel aging. The nose is intensely aromatic with dried flowers, alpine herbs, citrus peel, chamomile, white pepper, and fresh grape skin. The palate is vibrant and savory, balancing earthy rusticity with remarkable lift and purity. There’s a gentle warmth, subtle spice, and a long finish marked by floral notes, orchard fruit, and a faint nuttiness.

This is a deeply traditional style of grappa that rewards slow sipping, especially after dinner, but it also appeals to spirits enthusiasts interested in old-world distillation and heritage producers.
