The classically styled 2020 Chateau Lafon Rochet shows the opulent, earthy character of recent hot, dry vintages—at a fraction of Napa prices. This Fourth Growth estate in southern Saint-Estèphe borders Cos d’Estournel and Lafite Rothschild, with vines in a single block founded in 1650 and held by the same family for over 200 years. The modern era began in 1959 when the Tesseron family—famed for Cognac and later owners of Pontet-Canet—rebuilt the estate from scratch, raising quality dramatically. The 2020 is about 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The Merlot, planted on prized blue clay (Crasse de Fer) like that of Petrus, adds seductive richness—especially in a vintage where Merlot shined.
